28Th Annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities Hosts Historic Eatonville @ Year 130 Celebration and Multi-Disciplinary Programming January 20-29

The Sankofa Project of Florida is born out of a legislative initiative sponsored in 2015 by Sen. Geraldine Thompson of Orlando, Florida. It was funded in 2016, the Florida Department of State provided funds to enhance and promote Florida’s African-American culturally historic museums and festivals.

Florida boasts some of the most interesting and historically relavent museums in the country. These eye-opening exhilarating facilities consist of the home of a slain husband-and-wife civil rights activists, the birthplace of a world-renowned novelist and folklorist and even a hotel owned by one of Orlando’s first black doctors, where famous African-American performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Ray Charles and many others stayed and performed.

These are just a few of the many outstanding historic museums that can be found in Florida. In addition to these museums, Florida features African-American themed festivals that honor our music history, from the blues to hip hop and R&B, as well as African dance and our excellent African-American culture.

The museums and festivals that are currently partnered with the Sankofa Project of Florida offer unique educational and cultural heritage facts on various aspects of Florida African-American individuals and events. The partners of the Sankofa Project network are:

• EXCELSIOR/LINCOLNVILLE MUSEUM
• FAMU MEEK-EATON BLACK ARCHIVES
